THE DORIS MITCHELL STORY
The year is 1922 and Doris Mitchell has left her hometown in Cornwall, England to start a new life in Melbourne, Australia. Doris is working in the fashionable Block Arcade and has formed new friendships with the shop girls in the Arcade. The girls meet in the Tearoom daily to chat about their lives, the latest fashions, changing hairstyles and of course, anything to do with romance.
After returning from the Great War, William Absalom chooses to live a quiet life on the family sheep station in the Western District, the harsh realities of war have left him weary and withdrawn. William is surprised when his feelings unexpectedly change after a visit from an old friend. Determined to put his troubled past behind him William embarks on a quest to rebuild his life and follow his hearts desire.

I’ve just started reading Doris Mitchell’s journal entries in 'The Tearoom Diaries', and I’m already a little enchanted. Set in 1922, the writing feels so intimate, like you’ve stumbled across someone’s private thoughts and can’t help but keep turning the pages.
Doris has such a natural, engaging voice. There’s something quietly captivating about the way she notices the world around her, and it makes you feel close to her almost immediately. The journal style really adds to that feeling, like you’re getting to know her one entry at a time.
I also love how the time period comes through in these gentle, everyday details - it never feels forced, just beautifully woven in. There’s this soft sense that something more is waiting beneath the surface, and it’s already pulling me in.

I always make myself a cup of Tea and sit down at the Dining table to open and enjoy my Letters from Doris.
They take me back to simpler and gentler times.
My Aunt worked in Georges back in the 1920s so I have many stories she shared with us and such happy memories of Block Arcade ,the lovely speciality Shops and particularly the TeaRooms .
My favourite thing to do when I go into the City is stroll through the Arcades and soak in the beautiful Mosaic tiled Floors, the Architecture and charm of the Shops.
Now I will be able to imagine all sorts of things while I wander through. I love the History of Melbourne in the 1920's that is so beautifully woven into the Letters and the gorgeous Postcards included.
I always read all the extra information that is included on line too.

I'm enjoying receiving & reading my correspondence from Doris Mitchell. It's a lovely feeling when I see Doris' letter sitting in my letterbox & I take time out to sit quietly with a cuppa & read my letter. I am transported back in time & familiar with the storyline setting having visited Melbourne & country Victoria several times, strolled through the beautiful Block Arcade browsing in the shops & having morning tea with a friend in a quaint teashop many years ago now. The era of the storyline aligns with the young adult lives of my grandparents (now deceased). It makes me relive my connection with them, such fond memories. I have enjoyed the beautiful vintage cards I have received so far, & wrote & gave one to a girlfriend with the sentiment of "thinking of you".
