Letter 9 - Ida Rentoul Outhwaite
Ida Rentoul Outhwaite
- Ida Rentoul Outhwaite was one of Australia’s most beloved illustrators, famous for fairy worlds drawn with delicacy, imagination and unmistakably Australian detail. Born in Carlton, Melbourne, in 1888, she grew up in a literary and artistic household and began publishing illustrations while still a teenager. Her work often combined European fairy tradition with Australian bushland, birds, animals and light.

By the 1920s, Outhwaite’s fairies, elves and enchanted forests had made her name well known far beyond the nursery. Her pictures offered something gentle but powerful: a secret world close to home, hidden among trees, flowers and moonlit places. Outhwaite’s art is an invitation to believe that ordinary landscapes can hold magic, longing and escape.
