LETTER 4 – HER MAJESTY’S THEATRE
Her Majesty’s Theatre, a jewel of Melbourne’s stage, first opened in 1886 as the Alexandra Theatre. Purchased by theatre impresario J.C. Williamson in 1900, it became “Her Majesty’s” in 1924, a name it proudly bears again today. Though a fire in 1929 reduced it to ashes, it rose anew in striking Art Deco style—a design that endures as part of its charm. Through the decades, its grand stage has welcomed operas, ballets, and glittering musicals, graced by some of the world’s most celebrated performers. To this day, Her Majesty’s remains a living symbol of Melbourne’s love of the theatre.

GARDEN HOUSE
Built in 1854 as the residence for the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Garden House stands as a graceful reminder of the Gardens’ early history. Once home to generations of directors, it has long been a place of hospitality and quiet charm, hosting gatherings amid sweeping lawns and ancient trees. The surrounding landscape reflects the vision of William Guilfoyle, whose picturesque planting style shaped the Gardens into the romantic haven we know today. Today Garden House continues to embody a timeless harmony between architecture, nature, and the art of cultivated beauty.
