LETTER 2 – GROSVENOR CHAMBERS

In the heart of Collins Street once stood Grosvenor Chambers — Melbourne’s own cradle of creativity. Built in 1888 at number 9, its tall windows and lofty studios became home to generations of artists, sculptors, and photographers. Among its most famous tenants was painter Tom Roberts, whose studio gatherings helped spark Australia’s Heidelberg School. Within its walls, portraits were painted, friendships forged, and exhibitions held by lamplight. For more than sixty years, Grosvenor Chambers stood as a symbol of bohemian life in “Marvellous Melbourne,” before giving way to progress — but its legacy still whispers through the city’s artistic heart.
